The Impact of Poor Posture on Health

Poor posture has a direct impact on our overall health and well-being. Research indicates that up to 90% of people experience issues related to poor posture (1). Common postural imbalances include:

  • Slouching

  • Forward pelvis

  • Rotated hips

  • Forward head position

  • Rounded shoulders (often referred to as dowager’s hump)

Each of these postures places additional stress on the spine, which can lead to a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, including tension, soreness, headaches, back pain, and fatigue. More importantly, poor posture can have a significant effect on the nervous system, which may impact a person’s day-to-day functioning. This can result in negative effects on mood, concentration, cognitive function, and even performance at work or in daily activities (2).

Scoliosis and Posture

Scoliosis is a condition characterized by a lateral (sideways) curvature of the spine. When the curvature exceeds 10 degrees, it is typically classified as scoliosis. Curves less than 10 degrees are generally considered to be within the normal range for postural changes. Scoliosis may also occur alongside other abnormal spinal curvatures, such as lordosis(curvature toward the front) or kyphosis (curvature toward the back). In many cases, the vertebrae are also rotated.

For individuals with back pain associated with scoliosis, chiropractic adjustments and exercise may offer relief and help improve spinal function. Most people with scoliosis can lead normal, active lives, and physical activity, including exercise, is typically well-tolerated and encouraged in most cases.

  • Chiropractic care can assist in improving posture by identifying and correcting spinal misalignments. Through gentle adjustments and guidance on postural exercises, chiropractors work to restore proper alignment and alleviate associated discomfort. By addressing the root causes of poor posture, chiropractic care can help reduce pain and improve overall health.
